Executive Functioning
An individual with executive functioning concerns may struggle with the mental skills that support organizing, time management, emotional regulation, and maintaining focus on a goal. These challenges often make it difficult to initiate tasks, concentrate, manage responsibilities, and navigate unexpected changes.
Executive functioning difficulties can appear in children, adolescents, and adults. The associated challenges may impact school progress or work tasks. The struggles that surface are not linked to the individual’s intellect or motivation; it's a reflection of the brain's ability to arrange information.
Indicators to Look For:
Difficulty initiating tasks and once started struggle to complete them
Appears “scattered,” “rushed,” or “disorganized”
Needs constant reminders for daily responsibilities
Becomes overwhelmed when faced with multi-step tasks
Misplaces frequently used items (ie. celluphone, car keys)
Impulsive emotional reactions
Trouble tolerating unexpected changes
